HMP Millsike Completion | JB Associates

This partially renewable energy prison is the first of four new prisons our client WT are working for the Ministry of Justice UK on in forthcoming years. Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, who opened the prison, said it, “set the standard for the jails of the future”.

HMP Millsike is the first prison in the UK to run solely on electricity. The MoJ expects that the use of solar panels and heat pumps will save £1m a year. The build is a Category C prison which has created 1,468 new places for category C prisoners. Constructed by Kier Construction, the site includes six Houseblocks, a Care and Segregation Unit, an Entrance Resource Hub, a Support Building, various Workshops, Kitchens and a Central Services Unit housing health, education and faith areas. Following a period of operator preparation, the first prisoners will arrive in spring 2025.
